Artificial Intelligence: Evolution and Revolution

The authors start the book with a quote from Confucius. I liked the use of this quote – it provides a sense of what needs to be done and emphasizes the patience required for the development of artificial intelligence.

The book begins with this quote:

“Learn avidly. Question repeatedly what you have learned. Analyze it carefully. Then put what you have learned into practice intelligently” – CONFUCIUS

Artificial Intelligence: Evolution and Revolution

Artificial Intelligence models are trained using large amounts of data. This data is typically gathered from various sources, such as internet forums, company records, search engine results, etc.

However, the compiled data is not typically usable out of the box. It needs to be processed and prepared to ensure that the model is fed proper information. If not, the “unprepared” data can drastically affect the training of the model and its performance.

For example, if the data contains biased information, the model will produce biased results. The concept of “garbage in, garbage out” definitely applies here.

The preparation of the data can account for the majority of the effort.

Artificial Intelligence in Various Industries

Almost all industries now have applications that use artificial intelligence to augment their performance. The book gives examples of use cases in healthcare and medicine, insurance, finance, retail, utilities, education, automobiles, and more.

What is clear is that artificial intelligence usage will expand within these industries as its benefits grow.

Will it Become Self-Aware?

The authors expect that AI systems will become self-aware in the next 10 years after publishing the book.

In the long-term, maybe within 50 years, these systems will continue to evolve until they become our counterparts – named “synthetic” beings. These beings will demonstrate better understanding, reasoning, and thought processing.

We may encounter challenges in trying to define the roles of these beings within our societies. It will be common to have a robot with human intelligence in every home.

Our human intelligence may be augmented with smart technologies. This would make us much smarter by simply uploading information and experience to our brains.

Technological advancement may get to a point where we would live in virtual reality and not be able to distinguish the difference.
